My Maytag washer squeaks and smells like burning?

It started making squeaking and grinding sounds then would quit. I kept using it then it totally quit on me while it was on the rinse cycle. There is now water sitting in the tub. It sometimes makes sounds and attempts to spin it out and then stops. Last I checked it started to stink when I tried to finish the spin cycle. What could be wrong with it?
